Why is New York State Capitol said to be haunted?
Completed in 1899 after nearly three decades of construction and roughly $25 million spent — an enormous sum for a government building at the time — the New York State Capitol in Albany carries a tragedy few visitors know. On March 29, 1911, a fire tore through the State Library, then housed in the Capitol's western section, destroying tens of thousands of historical documents and killing night watchman Samuel Abbott, whose body was found in the ashes. Staff and legislators since have described a lingering smoky smell with no traceable source near the old library wing, footsteps in empty corridors after hours, and sudden cold drafts around the Great Western Staircase. "Late at night, that building has a different feel entirely," a former Capitol employee once told a local historian. Listed on the National Register in 1971, the Capitol remains one of Albany's most storied buildings.
