Why is Old State House (Hartford, Connecticut) said to be haunted?
Completed in 1796, Hartford's Old State House carries more than two centuries of reported hauntings. Staff and visitors trace much of the activity to Joseph Steward, the minister-painter who opened a "museum of curiosities" inside the building in 1796 and is said to still walk its halls. Other stories reach further back, to Alice Young, hanged nearby in 1647 as Connecticut's first executed "witch." In 2009, the Sci-Fi Channel's Ghost Hunters (TAPS) investigated the building for episode 524 and reported an unexplained doorknob turning in the empty Senate chamber, plus a woman's sigh captured in the old Steward Museum room. The building still functions as a working history site, but its reputation as one of Hartford's most haunted addresses endures.
