Why is Olivewood Cemetery said to be haunted?

Founded in 1875 as one of the first cemeteries organized by and for Houston's African American community after emancipation, Olivewood sits on six wooded acres along a bend of White Oak Bayou near the old Fourth Ward. Decades of flooding, vandalism, and neglect left much of it swallowed by undergrowth by the late twentieth century, until the Descendants of Olivewood began restoration work in the 2000s. Volunteers clearing the site have long described an unusual stillness among the toppled headstones, and a persistent local account holds that lantern lights appear near the bayou at dusk, as if someone were tending graves that families can no longer find. "You feel like you're being watched over, not haunted," one restoration volunteer said in a 2015 interview. Many of the cemetery's roughly 4,000 burials remain unmarked or unidentified.
