Why is Orpheum Theatre (Memphis) said to be haunted?

The current Orpheum Theatre opened in 1928 on Beale Street after fire destroyed the original 1907 vaudeville house. Staff and performers have long attributed the new building's odd occurrences to "Mary," said to be a girl of about twelve killed by a streetcar outside the original theater around 1921. Actors report a cold hand on the shoulder backstage, and stagehands famously leave seat C5 in the orchestra section empty during rehearsals as a courtesy. "She likes the theater, she just doesn't like being ignored," a longtime stage manager told a local paper in the 1990s. The Memphis Ghost Tours group has documented the legend since at least 1994, and touring Broadway casts are still told the story on their first night in the building.
