Why is Palace Theatre (New York City) said to be haunted?

The Palace Theatre opened at 1564 Broadway in 1913 and quickly became vaudeville's ultimate proving ground — performers who "played the Palace" had, by the era's own logic, officially made it. That century of ambition and hard living left one of Broadway's richest ghost catalogues: staff have long reported the apparition of a stagehand known as Georgie, said to have fallen to his death from the fly gallery, along with unexplained cold spots backstage and disembodied applause echoing through empty houses after final curtain. Some performers have also claimed brief encounters they associated with Judy Garland, who staged a celebrated comeback there in 1951 during one of her lowest periods. "Every old-timer backstage has a Palace story," a longtime crew member once said. Restored for legitimate Broadway productions in recent years, the ornate three-level auditorium still draws ghost-tour groups after dark.
