Why is Pemberton Hall (Eastern Illinois University) said to be haunted?
Built in 1909 as the first women's residence hall on an Illinois state university campus, Pemberton Hall at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston still carries the legend of "Mary Hawkins," a student said to have been murdered by an ax-wielding caretaker in the hall's early years. According to campus folklore, Mary's ghost never left the fourth floor, moving furniture in the old chapel room, flickering lights, and locking doors on residents who spoke ill of her. Generations of students have reported hearing a piano playing in an empty room after midnight and cold drafts moving through hallways with no windows open. The story has no confirmed police record behind it, but it has been retold at freshman orientation for so long that, as one resident assistant said, "you stop questioning it and just say goodnight to Mary before bed."
