Why is Pennhurst State School and Hospital said to be haunted?

Opened in 1908 as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, Pennhurst warehoused thousands of disabled children and adults in conditions exposed nationally by Bill Baldini's 1968 NBC10 documentary "Suffer the Little Children," which showed patients neglected and restrained in overcrowded wards. The scandal fueled the landmark 1977 federal case Halderman v. Pennhurst, which helped reshape disability rights law, and the institution finally closed on December 9, 1987, after 79 years. Former patients and investigators say the campus carries real psychological weight; visitors report disembodied cries and cold spots in the old dormitories. Since 2010 the site has run seasonally as the Pennhurst Asylum haunted attraction, staged atop a documented history many consider more disturbing than any actor.
