Why is Peoria State Hospital said to be haunted?

Operated by the State of Illinois from 1902 to 1973 in Bartonville, near Peoria, the hospital was built under Dr. George A. Zeller on the progressive "cottage plan," replacing restraints with open wards β€” a reform effort that didn't stop its 63 buildings from accumulating dark folklore. The best-known legend involves "Old Book," a devoted patient named A.M. Bookwalter who was reportedly bricked into a wall alive by fellow inmates around 1910 as punishment; his grave is still visited today. Zeller himself documented an unexplained "soul light" said to hover over the cemetery the night patient Manuel Bookbinder died in 1908, an event he wrote about in his own memoirs. Most of the asylum was demolished in the 1970s-80s, but the surviving Bowen Building and cemetery remain a magnet for ghost tours.
