Why is Preston Manor, Brighton said to be haunted?

Preston Manor is the former manor house of the old Sussex village of Preston, now part of Brighton and Hove, England. Much of the current building dates to an 1738 rebuilding by Lord of the Manor Thomas Western over a surviving 13th-century core, with a major 1905 enlargement by architect Charles Stanley Peach. Owned for generations by the wealthy Stanford family before being bequeathed to Brighton Corporation in 1932, it is now a museum depicting Edwardian upstairs-downstairs life. Grade II*-listed, the house is reputed to be among the most haunted buildings in Britain, having hosted ghost tours and featured on the television series "Most Haunted," with sightings reported across its rooms and walled garden.
