Why is Rose Island (Rhode Island) said to be haunted?
This 18-acre island in Narragansett Bay took its name, tradition says, from its rose-like shape at low tide, and by 1870 the U.S. government had built a lighthouse there to guide ships through the channel below Newport. Fort Hamilton, an unfinished 19th-century coastal battery, still crumbles on the island's higher ground, abandoned before completion and left to the elements for over a century. Caretakers who have lived in the restored lighthouse since the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation took over in 1985 describe unexplained footsteps on the tower stairs and a sense of being watched from the fort's empty gun emplacements at night. Accessible only by boat, the island's isolation, its ruined fort, and its working light give it an atmosphere overnight guests still call distinctly uneasy after dark.
