Why is Seaview Terrace said to be haunted?
Completed in 1925 as one of the last great Newport "summer cottages," this Châteauesque mansion was built for Edson Bradley and later became known as the Carey Mansion after a subsequent owner. Its turreted exterior gained wider fame as the fictional Collinwood Mansion on the gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows" from 1966 to 1971, a role that folded the show's vampire and ghost storylines into the house's own reputation. Decades leasing part of the property to Salve Regina University brought reports from students and staff of footsteps in empty upper rooms and a cold presence near the main staircase, details longtime Newport tour guides still repeat. Privately owned today and rarely open to the public, the mansion keeps most of its interior, and its stories, out of view.
