Why is Sims, North Dakota said to be haunted?
Sims began as a booming coal town in 1883, but as the mines emptied and the town emptied with them, only the Scandinavian Lutheran church and its parsonage kept their doors open. The haunting is tied to Bertha Dordal, young wife of pastor L. D. Dordal and the church organist, who died in the parsonage sometime between 1916 and 1918 after a long illness. Within years, residents reported the organ playing on its own, second-floor windows opening and closing unassisted, and a gray-cloaked figure gliding through the upstairs rooms β locals named her the Gray Lady of Sims. In 1930 a preacher reportedly abandoned the parsonage over the disturbances, and parishioners wrote to their bishop asking what to do. The church, still restored and active every other Sunday, remains North Dakota's most visited paranormal site.
