Why is SS V. A. Fogg said to be haunted?
The SS V.A. Fogg, a T2 tanker originally launched in 1943 as the Four Lakes, was carrying benzene and other chemicals when she exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico off Freeport, Texas, on February 1, 1972. All 39 crew aboard were killed, and when the wreck was finally located weeks later on the seafloor, investigators found bodies still at their posts, suggesting the disaster struck with almost no warning β a detail that has fed persistent Bermuda Triangle-adjacent speculation ever since, even though the loss lies well outside the Triangle's usual boundaries. Coast Guard investigators concluded a chemical reaction likely triggered the explosion, but the exact sequence was never fully reconstructed. Gulf Coast mariners still cite the Fogg alongside the Marine Sulphur Queen as one of the two great unexplained tanker losses of the region.
