Why is St. Augustine Light said to be haunted?
The current St. Augustine Light Station, built between 1871 and 1874 on Anastasia Island, replaced an earlier tower and stands where Spanish and British watchmen kept beacons burning as far back as 1565. Tragedy struck during its construction in 1873, when the daughters of head lighthouse keeper Hezekiah Pittee, Mary and Eliza, drowned along with a friend after the small rail cart they were playing on rolled off the dock and into the water. Keepers and visitors have since reported the scent of perfume drifting through the tower's spiral stairwell, childlike laughter echoing from the empty keeper's house, and cold, damp footprints appearing on the stairs in the shape of small feet. The lighthouse, still an active aid to navigation, is regularly investigated by paranormal researchers and remains one of Florida's most visited haunted landmarks.
