LOCATION
Why is St. John's Episcopal Church (Lafayette Square) said to be haunted?
Known as the "Church of the Presidents" since James Madison first worshipped there in 1816, St. John's sits one block from the White House on Lafayette Square. Its ghost story is tied to the church's 1,000-pound bell, cast in 1822 by Joseph Revere, son of Paul Revere: legend holds that whenever the bell tolls to mark the death of a person of national importance, six men in white robes emerge from the pillars outside at midnight, cross the aisle, and gather silently in the president's pew before vanishing. No one has ever identified who the six are supposed to be, and the church itself makes no official claim about the story β it survives purely as a piece of Lafayette Square lore, passed down alongside the neighborhood's other ghost tales tied to the War of 1812 and the assassination-haunted streets nearby. The bell, at least, is real and still rings.
