Why is Stow House said to be haunted?
The 1873 Carpenter Gothic home Sherman Stow built for his bride Ida Hollister on the former Rancho La Patera is now run as a museum by the Goleta Valley Historical Society β and has built a reputation as one of the area's most active hauntings. Staff and visitors report footsteps in empty rooms, sudden cold spots, self-closing doors and whispered voices, along with occasional sightings of a woman in Victorian dress believed to be a member of the Stow family. Some accounts tie the activity to hardships and untimely deaths in the family, and to experiments once carried out in son Edgar Stow's on-site laboratory. The house's reputation grew nationally after a 2023 episode of "Ghost Adventures" filmed an overnight investigation there.
