Why is Stuckey's Bridge said to be haunted?

Stuckey's Bridge crosses the Chunky River just outside Meridian, Mississippi, on a spot locals have tied for generations to a 19th-century highwayman named John Stuckey, said to have robbed and murdered travelers before a mob strung him up from the very structure that bears his name. Visitors report seeing a hanged figure swinging beneath the ironwork at dusk, hearing footsteps on the old wooden planks, and catching sudden drops in temperature over the water. In 2005 a Meridian teenager's body was found near the bridge, a real tragedy that only deepened the site's dark reputation and folded new whispers into the older legend. "Cross it after dark if you dare," is the standing challenge among local teenagers. Named a Mississippi Landmark in 1984, the bridge is closed to vehicle traffic today but remains a magnet for storytellers and thrill-seekers alike.
