Why is Stull, Kansas said to be haunted?

Stull, an unincorporated Douglas County community founded in 1857 as "Deer Creek" by Pennsylvania Dutch settlers before being renamed for postmaster Sylvester Stull, would likely have faded into obscurity if not for a single 1974 University of Kansas student newspaper article. That piece claimed the ruined Stull Cemetery, beside a roofless 1867 stone church, was one of the "seven gateways to hell" and that the Devil himself appeared there twice a year, on Halloween and the spring equinox. The legend metastasized through the 1980s and '90s β€” fed by an unfounded rumor that Pope John Paul II's flight path deliberately avoided the town during a 1999 U.S. visit β€” into one of the most cited pieces of American Satanic folklore, drawing so many trespassing thrill-seekers that local police began active patrols every October 31st, a practice that continues today.
