Why is Sturdivant Hall said to be haunted?

Completed in 1856 for cotton planter Colonel Edward Watts in Selma, Alabama, Sturdivant Hall later passed to banker John McGee Parkman, whose story gave the mansion its enduring legend. During the chaos of the Civil War's final months, Parkman was accused of embezzling funds from the Alabama and Mississippi Rivers Railroad Company; jailed in nearby Cahaba in 1867, he attempted to escape and was shot dead, according to local tradition, by a guard as he fled toward the very house he once called home. Visitors and staff at the historic house museum have long reported footsteps on the stairs, doors that swing open on their own, and a shadowy figure glimpsed near the upper windows, said to be Parkman still trying to reach his beloved Sturdivant Hall. The mansion, praised by White House restoration architect Edward Vason Jones as among the finest Greek Revival homes in the Southeast, remains a centerpiece of Selma's antebellum architecture.
