Why is Tennessee State Prison said to be haunted?
Tennessee State Prison opened in 1898 on a bluff above the Cumberland River west of Nashville, its castle-like Gothic facade designed to intimidate. Over nine decades it held some of the state's most notorious inmates and carried out executions by electric chair, including that of James Sarver in 1913 amid one of the prison's several riots. Overcrowding and a wave of lawsuits forced its closure in 1992, and the abandoned cellblocks later served as the backdrop for The Green Mile and Walk the Line. Former guards and film crews alike have described disembodied voices echoing down "Death Row" and cell doors that rattle with no one near them. "There's something in that building that doesn't want you comfortable," one location scout said after filming there. An EF3 tornado tore through the site in March 2020, collapsing part of the west wing.
