Why is The Grove (Jefferson, Texas) said to be haunted?

Built around 1861 as the Stilley-Young House, The Grove has been called "the most haunted house in Texas" since paranormal investigators began documenting it in the 1990s. Owners Mitchel and Tawyna Whitington, who bought the house in 1984, reported hearing children laughing in empty rooms and catching a recurring cold spot by the fireplace they nicknamed after a Confederate-era resident said to have died there. A local psychic once described the house as holding "layers of the dead, like this place never let anyone truly leave." The property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, was featured on HGTV's If Walls Could Talk and named one of the twelve most haunted homes in America by This Old House magazine.
