Why is The Mount (Lenox, Massachusetts) said to be haunted?
Author Edith Wharton designed and built The Mount in 1902 on a hillside in Lenox, Massachusetts, calling it her "first real home" and using its layout as a working laboratory for the design principles she later published in The Decoration of Houses. After Wharton sold the estate in 1911 and it passed through decades of other uses β including a girls' school and a summer theater company β staff and visitors began reporting a woman in Edwardian dress glimpsed in the library and gardens, doors that close without a draft, and the sound of a dog's nails on hardwood in rooms with no animal present, echoing Wharton's well-documented love of her lapdogs. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971, The Mount now runs public ghost tours each October.
