West of Sedgwick, Kansas, a modest bridge over Jester Creek has carried the name Theorosa's Bridge since at least the mid-20th century, its wooden predecessor having burned and been rebuilt more than once. The most repeated version of the legend tells of a young unmarried woman named Theorosa who, shamed and desperate sometime in the 1800s, drowned her infant in the creek below before taking her own life nearby β a story locals sometimes shorten by calling the crossing "Cry Baby Bridge." Visitors who stop there after dark say they hear a baby crying beneath it, or glimpse a pale woman searching the water, and some claim car engines stall or headlights flicker while crossing. No historical record confirms Theorosa ever existed, and locals disagree on nearly every detail, but the story has circulated among Wichita-area teenagers for generations, cementing the bridge's place on regional ghost-hunting routes.
