Why is Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum said to be haunted?
Rising from the hills above Weston, West Virginia, the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum opened in 1864, built on the Kirkbride Plan that Victorian architects believed could cure madness through light, air, and symmetry. Raised largely with hand-cut sandstone by Confederate prisoners and local laborers, it was designed to hold 250 patients but by the 1950s crammed in more than 2,400, packed into hallways and converted basements. Decades of overcrowding, restraint use, and lobotomies performed by Dr. Walter Freeman left a heavy legacy before the hospital closed in 1994. Reopened as a tourist attraction in 2008, guides today report cold spots in the old medical ward, footsteps echoing down the Kirkbride corridors at night, and the small shadow of a girl said to have died on the fourth floor. 'You can feel someone watching you the second you step inside,' one longtime guide has said, explaining why investigators rank it among Appalachia's most active sites.
