Why is White House said to be haunted?
The White House has hosted ghost stories since well before it burned in the War of 1812. First Lady Abigail Adams reportedly saw her own laundry-hanging apparition, and later residents linked the East Room to her ghost. But the most persistent legend concerns Abraham Lincoln, assassinated in 1865: staff and guests over the following decades reported his figure pacing the halls or standing at a window in the Lincoln Bedroom. Winston Churchill, staying overnight in the 1940s, is said to have encountered Lincoln's presence near the fireplace and refused to sleep in that room again. First Lady Grace Coolidge claimed to see Lincoln standing at a window, hands clasped behind his back, staring toward the Potomac 'as if watching over a war that had never quite ended.' Eleanor Roosevelt later admitted she sometimes felt his presence while working late in the same room.
