What is Beast of Busco?

In 1949, the small farming town of Churubusco, Indiana, was gripped by "Oscar Fever" after farmer Gale Harris claimed to have seen an enormous snapping turtle — reportedly the size of a dining table, some said 500 pounds — surface in his spring-fed pond, nicknamed Fulk Lake. Harris and neighbors organized repeated hunts through the summer, draining part of the pond, hiring divers, and even bringing in a hypnotist who claimed he could lure the turtle with a trance; national newspapers and newsreel crews covered the spectacle, and thousands of tourists visited. Harris insisted until his death that the sighting was real, telling one reporter: "I know what I saw, and it wasn't no ordinary turtle." The creature, nicknamed "Oscar," was never captured, and the hunts fizzled out by the early 1950s, but Churubusco embraced the legend, renaming itself "Turtle Town USA" and holding an annual Turtle Days festival every June. Biologists note that alligator snapping turtles can occasionally exceed 200 pounds and that murky spring-fed ponds easily distort size estimates, making an unusually large but ordinary turtle the most plausible explanation for Oscar.
