The Fouke Monster is a Bigfoot-type creature said to haunt the swamps and bottomlands around the small town of Fouke in southwest Arkansas, described as a tall, hair-covered, ape-like biped with a hulking build, long arms, and a strong odor, sometimes said to leave three-toed footprints. Reports of a large, foul-smelling creature in the area date back decades, but the legend exploded into national awareness after a reported 1971 incident in which a local family said the creature attacked their home, an event that inspired the low-budget 1972 docudrama "The Legend of Boggy Creek," a surprise box-office hit that brought Fouke lasting fame as a cryptid hotspot.
