What is Fresno Nightcrawler?

The Fresno Nightcrawler is the rarest thing in cryptozoology: a creature whose origin can be dated to the month. In November 2007 a man in south-east Fresno, known to this day only as Jose, recorded two small pale figures — legs and almost nothing else — crossing his front yard at night. He took the tape to the Spanish-language network Univision, which called the radio host Victor Camacho; Camacho showed it at a UFO symposium in San Jose in July 2008, and what has circulated ever since is not the original file but a camcorder recording of a screen. The name itself is younger than the video: the Syfy programme Fact or Faked coined "nightcrawlers" in July 2010, failed to reproduce the footage with a costume, a puppet and a doll, and filed the case as unexplainable. Jose died before 2018 without being identified and without earning a cent, while his twenty seconds of video turned into plush toys, perfume, glow-in-the-dark shirts and stickers sold over the counter by the county's own tourist board. This is less a sighting than a case study in how a cryptid is born on the internet.

What is the history of Fresno Nightcrawler?

This is the only creature in the atlas whose birth can be dated to the month. Almost everything else here is folklore with fog around its origin. The Fresno Nightcrawler is a piece of video, and video leaves a paper trail. November 2007. A man in south-east Fresno who has never been publicly identified — every account calls him only Jose — recorded two small, pale, legs-only figures crossing the yard of his house, one behind the other, the leading one slightly taller. Even how he recorded it is disputed, and the dispute has never been settled. Syfy's own synopsis of the 2010 investigation says he heard his dogs barking, rushed out with a video camera and filmed them. Fresnoland and Visit Fresno County, both in 2025, tell it the other way round: he had aimed a camera at the yard because the dogs kept barking, and found the figures afterwards on the recording. Both versions descend from the same witness, fifteen years apart. The tape goes to Univision. Jose took it to the Fresno operation of Univision, the Spanish-language network. According to Brian Dunning, the station telephoned Victor Camacho — a Los Angeles broadcaster who had been on the radio since 1989, presented the Spanish-language late-night paranormal programme Los Desvelados and was then vice-president of the Mexican UFO organisation OMIFO — and asked him to come on air and say the figures were aliens. Camacho's account is that he declined, because he did not know what they were, and went to meet Jose instead, who was too frightened to say much. In February 2008 Jose called him back and Camacho visited the house, stood where the camera had stood, and judged the figures to have been small: no more than half a metre. Ten years later he told The Fresno Bee they were "approximately 3 feet" and might be an "extraterrestrial insectoid". No broadcast date for the Univision item has ever been published; all that survives of it is Camacho's description of Jose being filmed without showing his face. The clip escapes at a UFO conference — and it escapes second-hand. Camacho and Jerónimo Flores were billed to speak at the Mutual UFO Network's 39th International Symposium in San Jose, California, on the evening of Saturday 26 July 2008. What began circulating afterwards was not Jose's file. On 24 September 2008 the Fresno blogger Michael Banti published the earliest write-up anyone has been able to date, and he flagged the problem in his second paragraph: "the video isn't the original, but a recording someone filmed at a conference". Every copy in circulation since descends from a camcorder pointed at a screen. The original recording is, by every account, lost. The name is three years younger than the video, and it comes from television. On Thursday 22 July 2010 at 10 p.m., Syfy aired the second episode of Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, "Unwanted Visitors / Strange Sightings". Bill Murphy, Jael de Pardo and Larry Caughlan Jr. went to Fresno, interviewed Jose at his house and ran three reconstructions — a child in a costume, a hand-held puppet, a doll on a pulley — none of which resembled the footage. The team called the figures "nightcrawlers" and filed the case as Unexplainable. The label stuck; Banti has pointed out ever since that the things do not crawl, they walk. Then the sequels. In April 2011 a YouTube channel calling itself Dovus X-Life Operior posted a clearer clip said to have been shot the previous month by retired friends: two figures walking down a paved path. It is routinely called "the Yosemite video", but the location given by The Fresno Bee and The Business Journal is Yosemite Lakes Park, a residential community at Coarsegold in Madera County — not the national park. A near-black 35-second clip captioned as Polish followed in August 2017. History's The Proof Is Out There examined a 2020 video on 18 February 2022 and called it a puppet. PBS's Monstrum devoted an episode to the phenomenon on 13 February 2025. What it became. By 2018 there were pins and hand-sewn pillows; by 2022 the sisters Veronika and Alexandra Carrillo had founded Craft Coffin and Grant Wood's Fulton Factory was selling a glow-in-the-dark shirt as one of its best lines; by 2024 there was a plush toy from New Zealand and a cryptid perfume from North Carolina; in October 2025 the county's own tourist board began selling Nightcrawler stickers over its counter. Jose, who died at some point before 2018, was never named and, so far as anyone reports, never made a cent from any of it.

November 2007 A man in south-east Fresno, identified in every account only as Jose, records two small pale figures crossing his front yard at night. Brian Dunning dates the recording to November 2007; Syfy's synopsis says he ran outside with a video camera after his dogs barked, while Fresnoland and Visit Fresno County say he had already aimed a camera at the yard for that reason.
February 2008 Victor Camacho, the radio host Univision had called for comment, visits Jose's house at Jose's request, stands where the camera stood and estimates the figures at no more than half a metre tall. Nothing further is ever established by either man.
Saturday 26 July 2008 Camacho and Jerónimo Flores of OMIFO are billed from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mutual UFO Network's 39th International Symposium in San Jose, California, with a talk on 'The Latest UFO Investigations in Mexico'. Dunning identifies this symposium as where Camacho told the Fresno story publicly.
24 September 2008 Michael Banti posts on Weird Fresno the earliest write-up of the footage that can be dated, and notes that what he found on YouTube 'isn't the original, but a recording someone filmed at a conference'.
Thursday 22 July 2010 Syfy airs 'Unwanted Visitors / Strange Sightings', the second episode of Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files. Bill Murphy, Jael de Pardo and Larry Caughlan Jr. interview Jose, fail to reproduce the footage with a costumed child, a hand puppet and a doll on a pulley, and file the case as 'Unexplainable'. The team's word for the figures, 'nightcrawlers', becomes the creature's name.
7 October 2010 Karen Stollznow publishes 'Fact or Faked: Faked!' for the James Randi Educational Foundation, arguing that on this programme 'the unexplained becomes the “inexplicable”', and documenting a producer asking a skeptics' group to reshoot a knowingly faked video more dramatically for a $1,500 fee.
April 2011 In April 2011 the YouTube channel Dovus X-Life Operior uploads the second famous clip, said to have been recorded the previous month by retired friends. It is universally called 'the Yosemite video', but the location reported by the local press is Yosemite Lakes Park, at Coarsegold in Madera County, not the national park.
August 2017 An anonymous 35-second clip titled 'Fresno night crawlers found in Poland' is posted to YouTube. It is almost entirely black and has no description; it is nonetheless cited ever since as a Polish sighting.
19 October 2018 The Fresno Bee publishes the first substantial local feature on the creature. Camacho reveals that Jose has died and had been filmed without showing his face; Banti says that when he contacted regional tribes about the wooden statues circulating as 'indigenous' evidence, his contacts did not recognise them.
18 February 2022 The History Channel broadcasts 'The Nightcrawler and the Beast in the Trees' (The Proof Is Out There, season 2, episode 26), examining a later back-yard video and concluding that it is a puppet.
5 April 2022 Brian Dunning devotes Skeptoid episode 826 to the case, reconstructing the 2007–2011 chain and arguing that the creature's real interest is sociological: it is an urban legend 'supported by little or no actual belief by anyone that it's a real creature'.
15 September 2022 The Business Journal of Fresno documents the merchandising economy that has grown around the creature — stickers, plush toys, keyrings, animation — and interviews the Spanish digital artist Eduardo Valdés-Hevia, who notes that unlike European folklore the Nightcrawler can be traced to a specific year, place and person.

Is there a rational explanation for Fresno Nightcrawler?

Start with what is being analysed. It is not the recording Jose made. That file is lost, according to Visit Fresno County and to Weird Fresno; what circulates is a camcorder shot of a monitor, and the earliest datable write-up — September 2008 — already said so. Add the conference projector it was filmed off, the compression of the video-sharing sites of 2008, and every re-upload since, and the result is that the fine detail people argue about (whether there is a head, whether there are joints, whether the fabric folds) is not detail that survived from the original at all. No frame-level examination of the source file is possible, because there is no source file. That is the single most important fact about the case, and it is nearly two decades old. The size has grown in the retelling. Victor Camacho, the only investigator who visited the yard, put the figures at no more than half a metre when he described the visit in 2008. In 2018 he told The Fresno Bee about three feet. The Cryptid Wiki entry quoted by the same newspaper in 2024 gives roughly 1.5 metres. Nothing of known size appears in the frame, so none of these figures is measured; they are impressions, and they have drifted upward. The "unexplainable" verdict is weaker than its reputation. Syfy's own summary of the 2010 episode is explicit about how the team got there: three reconstructions failed, then their equipment misbehaved in a nearby wooded area and a thermal camera caught something that vanished, and the case was closed as Unexplainable. On 7 October 2010, eleven weeks after that broadcast, Karen Stollznow published a critique of the programme for the James Randi Educational Foundation: with this team, she wrote, "the unexplained becomes the 'inexplicable' and the team often appeal to supernatural explanations over natural ones". In the same piece she documented producer Jon Maas asking the Rocky Mountain Paranormal Research Society — who had made a deliberately faked Ouija video to demonstrate the trick — to reshoot it so the planchette moved "a bit more dramatically", with a $1,500 licence fee attached. The show that certified the Fresno tape was, in that same season, soliciting a better fake. The concrete explanations on offer. A puppet or a doll on a wire, as the show itself tried; a child in a costume, likewise; or, as the Fresno resident Matthew Jacobs put it in 2018, a cloth puppet on a wire — "or maybe just a pair of pajama pants". History's The Proof Is Out There concluded in 2022 that a later video of the same kind was a puppet. What does not exist, and this atlas will not pretend otherwise, is a published frame-by-frame analysis by a named video specialist. Nobody has done that work, and given the state of the surviving copy, nobody usefully can. Two things the record does settle. Photographs of wooden statues circulated from 2017 as evidence that indigenous peoples of the area had known the creature; Banti contacted regional tribes and his contacts did not recognise them — a piece of lore killed by the man who most wanted it to be true. And the Nightcrawler is genuinely a creature of screens and not of pages: a full-text search of the Internet Archive's scanned books on 11 August 2026 returned zero occurrences of the phrase "Fresno Nightcrawler", while the same index returns 1,238 for "Mothman" and 1,741 for "chupacabra". On the man himself. He was never named, he is dead, and no evidence has ever been published that he faked anything or profited from it. Claims that someone has "confessed" surface on forums periodically and none has ever been documented. The honest position is that the origin of the footage is undetermined.

Can you visit Fresno Nightcrawler?

There is no site to visit, and it matters to say so plainly. The yard is a private home in south-east Fresno whose address has never been made public, and which nobody has any business looking for. There is no marker, no trail and no tour. What there is, is a small, real and datable local economy. Visit Fresno County, the county's tourism board, sells its own Nightcrawler stickers over the counter at 1180 E. Shaw Ave, suite 201, Fresno, CA 93710 (tel. +1 559 981 5500). Hours as published on 2 October 2025: Monday to Thursday 8:00–17:00, Friday 8:00–15:30. The stickers cost $2, cash only, while supplies last — a deliberately finite run, so check by telephone before making the trip. The Tower District is where the trade lives. Craft Coffin, run by the sisters Veronika and Alexandra Carrillo, and Fulton Factory, run by Grant Wood, both sell Nightcrawler merchandise at local community events — Fresno's monthly Arthop art walk, Bad Girls Market and Tower Porchfest. Neither is a shopfront you can simply walk into; both trade through those events and online, so check their listings for dates. From anywhere. The plush toys most fans own come from small Etsy makers rather than from Fresno: Nerd Bird Studios in New Zealand (scented plush, $25.60 in 2024) and Groovy Galaxy in Charlotte, North Carolina (a roll-on cryptid perfume oil, $12.95 in 2024). Prices are as reported by The Fresno Bee and will have moved. Free, and the best introduction. The PBS Monstrum episode presented by Dr Emily Zarka, "How The Internet Created Its Own Viral Monster" (13 February 2025), runs eight minutes. The two television investigations — Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files season 1 episode 2 (Syfy, 22 July 2010) and The Proof Is Out There season 2 episode 26 (History, 18 February 2022) — are the documents the legend actually rests on. A note on the "where to spot one" lists. Visit Fresno County itself offers Woodward Park, Lost Lake, Millerton Lake and the Old Town Clovis Trail, with Michael Banti suggesting "between 8 p.m. and midnight". This is a joke, and the tourist board says so: no sighting has ever been recorded at any of them. They are, however, genuinely pleasant places to walk at dusk.
