What is Michigan Dogman?
The Michigan Dogman is described as a large, muscular canine-like creature that walks upright on two legs, standing roughly seven feet tall with a dog or wolf-like head, broad shoulders, and glowing eyes, often reported letting out a chilling, almost human scream. Sightings cluster in the forests and small towns of Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas, and the legend gained wide popularity after a 1987 radio novelty song, "The Legend," by Steve Cook, which claimed sightings had occurred in ten-year intervals dating back to the 1880s, a detail many researchers consider a later embellishment rather than a genuine historical pattern. Despite that dubious origin, the story took on a life of its own, fueled by local reports, a viral 2000s trail-camera video later suspected of being a hoax, and Michigan's broader tradition of Bigfoot-style sightings in its dense woodlands. Skeptical explanations point to misidentified bears standing on hind legs, large dogs or wolves seen at odd angles or in poor light, and the way a catchy song and internet lore can retroactively manufacture a decades-deep "tradition" for what is, at its core, a fairly recent piece of American regional folklore.
