What is White River Monster?
Since at least 1915, and with a major wave of sightings in 1937, residents near Newport, Arkansas, have reported a massive gray creature — described as elephantine, spiny-backed, and sometimes said to have a horn on its snout — surfacing in a deep hole of the White River known locally as "Whitey's hole." The most famous flurry came in July 1971, when plantation owner Cloyce Warren photographed what he said was the creature's back breaking the surface, prompting the Arkansas legislature to briefly consider declaring the river a wildlife sanctuary protecting the monster from hunters. Witness Bramlett Bateman told reporters that year: "It was as big as a boxcar, and it made a noise like a train whistle." The excitement drew national press and tourists to the small river town, and Newport still marks the legend with a White River Monster Refuge sign at the boat ramp. Marine biologists who reviewed the 1971 photographs suggested the ridged "spiny back" could be an unusually large sturgeon or a floating log catching the current, both plausible in the deep, murky holes of the White River where a genuinely oversized fish could easily be mistaken for something monstrous.
