Why is Ashmore Estates said to be haunted?
Ashmore Estates is a large brick building outside Ashmore, Illinois, built in 1916 as the second almshouse of the Coles County Poor Farm, which operated until 1959. That year it was purchased and renamed Ashmore Estates to serve as a private care facility for people with mental and other disabilities, a role it kept until closing in 1986 amid financial trouble. Left abandoned for two decades, the building gained a local reputation for strange lights and sounds tied to its history of housing the county's poorest and most vulnerable residents. In 2006 new owners reopened it as a commercial haunted attraction and paranormal investigation site, and despite storm damage in 2013 and a further change of ownership in 2014, it continues to be preserved and marketed for ghost tours and overnight investigations.
