Why is Baker Hotel (Mineral Wells, Texas) said to be haunted?

The Baker Hotel opened on November 22, 1929, a seven-story Spanish Colonial Revival tower built by hotelier T.B. Baker to draw visitors to Mineral Wells' famed "crazy water" mineral springs. For four decades it hosted Hollywood stars and Texas oil money before closing in 1972 and standing empty for nearly fifty years. Local lore centers on a young woman said to have drowned in the hotel's rooftop pool in the 1940s, and on room 219, where paranormal teams have recorded cold spots and unexplained footsteps. "You can feel someone walk past you in that hallway," a former security guard told a Fort Worth reporter during the building's long vacancy. An $80 million restoration reopened part of the hotel in 2024, but ghost hunters still request the upper floors.
