LOCATION
Why is Belcourt of Newport said to be haunted?
Richard Morris Hunt designed this roughly 60-room "cottage" for Gilded Age heir Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, completed in 1894 with stables built into the ground floor so Belmont, an avid horseman, could keep his carriages close to his living quarters. After Belmont's death, his widow Alva Belmont, the former Mrs. Vanderbilt and a leading suffragist, filled the halls with European armor and antiques. The Tinney family, who bought the crumbling mansion in 1956 and opened it for tours, spent decades describing unexplained footsteps, moving suits of armor, and a recurring cold presence they associated with Oliver Belmont himself. Now restored and renamed Belcourt of Newport, the estate leans into that reputation, hosting candlelit ghost tours through the Gothic hall where the armor allegedly rattles after dark.
