Why is Big Thicket said to be haunted?
Naturalists have called this tangled mix of pine forest, swamp and prairie in Southeast Texas "the biological crossroads of North America," and the National Park Service preserved roughly 100,000 acres of it as Big Thicket National Preserve in 1974, later recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. Long before the preserve existed, locals reported the Bragg Road Lights, unexplained glowing orbs seen drifting along a stretch of the Thicket's old rail bed near Saratoga since at least the 1930s, some blaming a headless brakeman who lost his lantern and his life to a passing train. The dense, swampy Thicket has also produced decades of reported sightings of a large, upright creature locals call the Big Thicket wildman or Texas Bigfoot, tracks logged informally since at least the 1960s.
