LOCATION
Why is Bobby Mackey's Music World said to be haunted?
The honky-tonk that country singer Bobby Mackey ran in Wilder, Kentucky, built its reputation on a genuinely dark local history: the site sits near where the headless body of Pearl Bryan was found in 1896, one of the era's most notorious unsolved murders, and the building itself once operated as an illegal casino and slaughterhouse. From the club's opening in the 1970s, staff and patrons described a "portal to hell" said to open in the basement, water stains on a wall that visitors swore resembled screaming human faces, and a resident spirit nicknamed "Johanna" tied to a Prohibition-era murder-suicide. The legend was amplified nationally by paranormal television specials in the 1990s and 2000s. The original building closed and began demolition in 2024, with owners announcing plans to preserve the "portal" wall and relocate the club's most infamous features to a new site in Florence, Kentucky.
