What is Thunderbird?

The Thunderbird is a colossal bird from Native American oral tradition, described across many tribes as a raptor-like being with a wingspan wide enough to blot out the sun, whose wingbeats produce thunder and whose eyes flash lightning; the Lakota call it Wakinyan, the "thunder being," a term still used in ceremony today. In modern folklore it has been reimagined as a flesh-and-blood giant bird, an oversized condor or eagle-like creature capable of carrying off small animals or even children. The most famous American sighting cluster comes from the Midwest, especially Illinois, where in the late 1940s, and again in 1977, witnesses reported enormous birds swooping low over towns; one incident involving a boy allegedly grabbed at by a huge bird became a local sensation. Skeptics point to misidentified turkey vultures, golden eagles, or Andean condors escaped from captivity, combined with exaggeration and the difficulty of judging size and distance for a bird in flight. No feather, bone, or photograph has ever confirmed a species beyond known raptors.
