Why is Bullock Hotel said to be haunted?

Seth Bullock, Deadwood's first sheriff and a close friend of Theodore Roosevelt, built this brick hotel with business partner Sol Star in 1895 after fire leveled his earlier hardware store on the same corner. Bullock died of cancer in the hotel in 1919, and staff have insisted ever since that he never checked out: employees and gamblers report the smell of cigar smoke on the stairs, cold drafts on the third floor, and objects moving behind the front desk. "He still runs a tight ship up there," a longtime bartender told a Rapid City reporter in the 2000s. The hotel now houses a casino alongside 28 of its original 63 rooms, and paranormal investigators have filmed segments there for cable television specials since the early 2000s.
