LOCATION
Why is Clinton Road (New Jersey) said to be haunted?
Clinton Road winds ten lonely miles through the Passaic County woods of West Milford, New Jersey, and by the 1970s had already become the state's single most notorious stretch of pavement. Drivers along its curves report a phantom boy said to appear near a small stone bridge β throw a coin into the creek below, legend insists, and he will toss it back. Locals also point to the ruins of Cross Castle on a ridge above the road, to reported Ku Klux Klan gatherings decades ago, and to a well-known 1980s case in which a mob associate's dismembered remains turned up in the surrounding woods, a real crime that hardened the road's reputation as a body-dumping ground. "You don't drive Clinton Road after midnight for fun," is the common local warning. Paranormal investigators, thrill-seeking teenagers and true-crime tourists still make the pilgrimage after dark despite state police patrols meant to discourage them.
