Why is Devil's Tramping Ground said to be haunted?
Deep in a stand of North Carolina pines near Bear Creek, a bare circle of ground roughly 40 feet across has resisted plant growth for as long as locals can remember, giving rise to one of the state's oldest folk legends. As the story goes, the Devil himself paces the ring each night, plotting humanity's downfall, and his relentless footsteps are what keep grass and seedlings from ever taking root inside the circle. Generations of Chatham County teenagers have camped overnight at the "Tramping Ground" on a dare, and many report waking to find tents mysteriously moved outside the bare ring's edge by morning, along with dogs that refuse to enter the circle at all. "Whatever you leave inside that circle overnight doesn't stay where you left it," one longtime area resident has said. Scientists have offered mundane explanations involving soil chemistry and salt content, but the legend, first noted in print in the early 20th century, has proven far harder to kill than the grass.
