LOCATION
Why is El Adobe de Capistrano said to be haunted?
El Adobe de Capistrano occupies two joined 19th-century adobe buildings near the mission, one of which once served as the town's jail and courtroom, complete with a holding cell still visible inside the restaurant today. Staff and longtime patrons have long connected the building's judicial past to reports of an unsettled presence near the old cell and upstairs rooms β glasses that shift on the bar, a sensation of being watched near the former courtroom, and cold drafts with no obvious source. The restaurant, opened in 1948, gained added notoriety as a favorite haunt of President Richard Nixon, who dined there so often while living nearby in San Clemente that a private table was informally set aside for him. Between its adobe walls, its history as a place of judgment and confinement, and its brush with presidential history, the building has become a fixture of San Juan Capistrano lore.
