Elmwood Cemetery has held Kansas City's dead since 1872, its 43 rolling acres now shading roughly 35,000 graves beneath elaborate Victorian statuary. Among the stone angels stands one carved figure locals have long nicknamed the "Black Angel" or "Weeping Angel," her face streaked dark by a century of rain and soot; the story goes that anyone who looks directly into her eyes at night will be marked by ill fortune before the year is out. Groundskeepers and night visitors have also described orbs of light drifting between the older sections and a persistent sense of being watched near the cemetery's original 19th-century burial ground. "You feel it before you see anything," one paranormal group noted after a 2015 overnight vigil. Now maintained by a nonprofit preservation society, Elmwood still draws history buffs by day and ghost hunters after dark.
