Why is Nine Men's Misery said to be haunted?

During King Philip's War, on March 26, 1676, a company of colonial soldiers under Captain Michael Pierce was ambushed by Narragansett warriors near the Blackstone River; nine captured men were reportedly tortured to death at this site in what is now Cumberland, Rhode Island. Local tradition holds that colonists raised a stone cairn over their remains that same year, and the granite monument later built here is often cited as the oldest war memorial in the United States. Hikers on the surrounding Cumberland Monastery trails have long reported unexplained cries and a heavy, oppressive silence near the marker, particularly around the ambush's late-March anniversary. The Trappist monks who once maintained the adjoining land treated the site with quiet reverence, and locals still visit it warily rather than casually.
