Why is Old Talbott Tavern said to be haunted?
The Old Talbott Tavern has served travelers in Bardstown, Kentucky since 1779, claiming the title of the state's oldest still-standing building and, by local tradition, a tavern that has never closed its doors. Each guest room is named for a historical figure said to haunt it, including exiled French king Louis Philippe, who reportedly stayed there in the 1790s and left behind murals that still show damage locals attribute to Jesse James. Tavern lore holds James rented a room in the 1880s and, startled by shadows on the wall he mistook for lawmen, fired his revolver at them, leaving bullet holes still visible in the plaster today. Staff describe glasses moving unassisted behind the bar and heavy footsteps climbing the stairs at night.
