Why is Pigford Building said to be haunted?
Built in 1914 for the Knights of Pythias, this three-story brick landmark in downtown Meridian later took the name of its owner, Pigford Realty, and by the 1990s housed a dress shop called Alexander's β whose staff blamed a persistent haunting on a woman in an old-fashioned white dress. Employees reported ghostly laughter, slamming doors, and clothes and jewelry found scattered each morning despite being hung up the night before; the spirit reportedly favored leaving costume jewelry as gifts while showing hostility toward male staff. On October 15, 1999, an employee named J.T. Mohammed said he saw the woman's apparition on the balcony. Folklorist Alan Brown investigated the building in the early 2000s and again in 2008, documenting a roof door nailed shut on its own and earrings that appeared overnight, before concluding the building was genuinely haunted.
