Why is Saltair (Utah) said to be haunted?

The first Saltair Pavilion opened on the Great Salt Lake's southern shore in 1893, a Moorish-domed resort built on pilings so Mormon-backed developers could offer "wholesome" lakeside entertainment away from Salt Lake City's saloons. Fire destroyed it in 1925 and again gutted its 1970s successor, and the lake's own retreat repeatedly stranded the pavilion far from water. Its eerie, half-abandoned state in the early 1960s made it the filming location for the 1962 cult horror film Carnival of Souls, whose ghostly dance-hall scenes were shot with little alteration to the real, decaying building. Longtime Salt Lake Valley residents still describe distant carousel music carried on the wind near the ruins at dusk. "It felt like walking into someone else's abandoned dream," one film crew member recalled of the 1962 shoot.
