Why is Sierra Nevada said to be haunted?

The Sierra Nevada's most infamous ghost story traces back to the Donner Party, a group of 87 California-bound pioneers who became trapped by heavy snow near the mountain pass that now bears their name during the winter of 1846-1847. Cut off from help for months, roughly forty members died of starvation and exposure before rescuers reached the survivors. Tamsen Donner, who reportedly refused to abandon her dying husband despite a chance to escape, herself perished in the snow. Locals and hikers around Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park have long claimed to see a glowing, translucent woman wandering the tree line on winter nights, always vanishing before she can be approached. Further south, boaters on Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay report a similar apparition: the ghostly figure of Captain Richard Barter, an English hermit who drowned there in an 1873 storm and is still said to appear rowing through the fog.
