Why is Skirvin Hilton Hotel said to be haunted?
Opened in 1911 by oil baron W. B. Skirvin, the Skirvin Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City built its ghost story around a chambermaid named Effie, said to have been kept as Skirvin's mistress in a locked room on the top floor. According to the legend, when Effie became pregnant she was hidden away, and after the baby's cries reportedly grew too loud to conceal, both mother and child vanished β some versions say Effie threw the infant from the window before jumping herself. Housekeeping staff and guests have long reported a crying baby heard through the walls of the tenth floor, doors that unlock themselves, and a woman's laughter in empty corridors. The story gained wide attention in 2010 when several Oklahoma City Thunder players said they were unsettled enough by nighttime encounters to change hotels during the NBA season.
