Why is SS Marine Sulphur Queen said to be haunted?

The SS Marine Sulphur Queen, a T2 tanker converted to haul molten sulphur, left Beaumont, Texas, on February 2, 1963, bound for Norfolk, Virginia, and was never seen again after a routine radio check near the Florida Straits. A search turned up only a few life jackets, a nameboard, and an oil slick; all 39 crewmen were lost, and no wreckage of the 524-foot vessel itself was ever recovered. A Coast Guard board of inquiry later found the ship structurally unsound and poorly maintained, likely breaking apart quickly in rough seas, yet the case is still cited as one of the classic Bermuda Triangle disappearances because the wreck itself vanished so completely. Families of the crew fought a long legal battle against the ship's owner over the loss, and Coast Guard safety rules for sulphur tankers were tightened as a direct result of the investigation.
