Why is Summerwind said to be haunted?

Built around 1916 as a summer residence for Chicago businessman and later U.S. assistant secretary of commerce Robert W. Lamont, Summerwind stood on the shore of West Bay Lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin, until a lightning-sparked fire in 1988 left only its stone shell standing. The Hinshaw family, who bought the house in 1970, later claimed it drove them out within weeks, reporting apparitions in the dining room, a furnace that lit itself, and windows that shattered without cause; their account, later amplified in regional books and paranormal television specials, made Summerwind a fixture of Midwestern ghost lore by the 1980s. Some later tellings added unverified rumors of a hidden room and satanic rituals on the grounds. "We didn't leave because we wanted to," family patriarch Arnold Hinshaw reportedly said of the sudden departure. The lakeside ruins, now on private land, remain closed to the public.
