Why is Tai Tung (restaurant) said to be haunted?
Tai Tung is the oldest surviving Chinese restaurant in Seattle's International District, opened in 1935 by an immigrant from Hong Kong. Nine decades on, it remains a neighborhood institution, the subject of the 2015 documentary A Taste of Home and a filming location for the 2020 movie The Paper Tigers, and it's famously one of the few Seattle restaurants open on Christmas Day. Beneath the dining room, staff and longtime regulars say the cellar is haunted by kuei, ghosts believed in Chinese folklore to linger where the living once suffered or died. Exactly whose spirits are said to walk the cellar has never been pinned down in print, but the story persists as part of the restaurant's identity, passed along the same way its recipes are: quietly, from one generation of the kitchen to the next.
